The Saint Lucia Labour Party states that it believes that a statement made by Minister of Home Affairs and National Security, Guy Mayers, on the recent attack on a traffic officer by a UWP operative is reckless and irresponsible. The SLP says that in a press statement yesterday, Mr. Mayers itdescribed “Smoking Joe’s” assault on SPC 267 Roberts as a simple case of an over zealous supporter and the sort of thing that has happened before. The SLP is of the view that the attitude of the Home Affairs Minister to Friday’s disturbing incident may very well explain why a Deputy Police Commissioner would have ordered the release of Gregory “Smoking Joe” Joseph without regard for the gravity of his action against the traffic officer.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party went on to say that it is appalled that Senator Guy Mayers seems to have dismissed and trivialized the fact that a criminal offense was committed by Mr. Frederick’s operative, who at the time appeared to be acting in the Minister’s defence. It is also worth noting that as the Minister charged with matters of national security, Mayers failed to condemn the actions of his colleague who is notorious for violating traffic laws. Further, he gave no indication of support to the principled stance of non-interference in investigations taken by Acting Commissioner Vernon Francois.
The SLP claims that It is sad that no assurance was given to the police that they can carry out their legitimate duty without fear or bias, knowing that their superiors would have utmost regard and respect for their work. The minister’s failure to assure the public that there will be absolutely no political interference in the matter and the general administration of the police force is not surprising as Mr. Mayers appears to be more concern with protecting the interest of his government than that of the country.
The Labour Party ended by stating that once again, the UWP government has responded in a manner and tone which gives no comfort to the public that justice will be served and that all action will be taken to ensure that their government ministers operate within the confines of the law.
