New joint EU-Caribbean strategy being drafted GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – Caribbean and European Union (EU) diplomats, government officials and representatives from regional organizations, the private sector and non-governmental organizations met to discuss the parameters for an enhanced Caribbean–EU partnership at a seminar in Barbados, 4-5 March 2010. The ultimate goal was to launch the process of drafting a new joint EU-Caribbean strategy.
A new Caribbean-EU strategy is considered necessary in light of new developments within both regions and at the global level. These developments include economic and financial crises, challenges related to climate change, crime and security and new geo-political interests and alignments.
25 Students Graduate from CHLI GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – Innovation and creativity is needed to keep the Caribbean’s health care systems going in the face of dwindling resources and an uncertain economic future. This was the view of one of the scholars belonging to the second cohort of graduates of the Caribbean Health Leadership Institute (CHLI).
Speaking at Wednesday’s graduation ceremony in her role as Valedictorian, Dr. Joy St. John, Chief Medical Officer, Barbados, Ministry of Health said that the CHLI was providing health leaders with the skills to survive and thrive. Community providing tangible assistance to Haiti GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continues to provide tangible assistance to the people of its Member State, Haiti, in the wake of the devastating earthquake which struck on 12 January.
Led by Jamaica, the sub-regional focal point for the area including Haiti under the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) arrangements had been providing assistance from 13 January 2010, about 24 hours after the catastrophic earthquake. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres89_10.jsp
CARICOM SG urges support for Chile GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – One of the items that Finance Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) considered at their meeting on Monday in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, was additional support to Haiti’s reconstruction.
But even as they contemplated this issue, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, CARICOM Secretary-General urged the Region to support Chile in the wake of an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which devastated central and southern parts of the Latin American country on Saturday 27 February. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres88_10.jsp
FISHERIES DEPARTMENTS URGED: TAKE FIRM APPROACH TO MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES RESOURCES Fisheries departments in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) must continue to take a very firm approach to the management of the Region’s fisheries resources for the benefit of all, said Mr. Johnson St. Louis, Senior Fisheries Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Grenada.
Mr. St. Louis was on Thursday declaring open in St George’s, Grenada, a two-day workshop on data collection techniques for field surveyors of Fisheries Departments from 10 Member States of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM). At the conclusion of the workshop, the surveyors will be able to conduct field work on a diagnostic study to determine the poverty levels in fishing communities in selected CARICOM/CRFM Member States. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres87_10.jsp
CARICOM and World Bank for joint discussions at Twenty-First Inter-Sessional GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will seek to articulate its positions on the major challenges it faced when it holds discussion with the President of the World Bank at the Twenty-First Inter-Sessional Meeting in Dominica from 11-12 March.
His Excellency Edwin Carrington, CARICOM Secretary-General, stated in his address on Monday 1 March at the Opening Ceremony of the Fourteenth Meeting of the Council of Finance and Planning (COFAP) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, that he was expectant that discussions between CARICOM Heads of Government and World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick would “result in the identification of new and viable approaches to the treatment of some of the major challenges facing our Region.” Representatives of the World Bank met with CARICOM Finance Ministers in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday as part of the preparations for the discussions which will take place between CARICOM Heads of Government and the President of the World Bank at the Twenty-First Inter-Sessional Meeting in Dominica. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres86_10.jsp
SWIFT ACTION NEEDED ON FINANCIAL ISSUES IN CARICOM GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – In pursuit of a seamless economic space there was need for swift action, towards “the regulation of the financial sector, fiscal strategies, marketing of the Caribbean brand and inward investment policies.”
This was the view expressed by the Honourable Karen Nunez-Tesheira, Minister of Finance, Trinidad and Tobago as she spoke at the Opening Ceremony of the Fourteenth Meeting of the Caribbean Community Council of Finance and Planning (COFAP) on Monday 1 March in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres85_10.jsp
COFAP urged to pursue adoption of CARICOM Financial Services Agreement GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CARICOM Secretariat – His Excellency Edwin Carrington, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General on Monday urged the Council of Finance and Planning (COFAP) to take “immediate action” on the CARICOM Financial Services Agreement, as the Community seeks to accelerate the development of a seamless financial landscape within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Fourteenth Meeting of COFAP on Monday 1 March in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Carrington encouraged CARICOM Finance Ministers to pursue a “firm commitment” towards the adoption of the Financial Services Agreement which he said was critical to the movement towards an integrated financial market. http://www.caricom.org/jsp/pressreleases/pres84_10.jsp
