The official launch of the Anse La Raye Water Supply Improvement Project took place this month aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Anse La Raye and environs through the availability of an improved potable water supply.
The project entails the reconstruction of the existing intake structure, a 400,000 gallon per day water treatment plant, a 200,000 gallon water storage tank, a treated water distribution pipeline and the upgrade of the An Tabor pump station. Chemical feeders have also been installed for raw water treatment.
The EC$6.0 million project funded under the EU SFA2003 Programme, Environment Management Fund and the Government of St. Lucia will comply with current World Health Organization guidelines for treated drinking water quality. The project is being implemented by the Banana Industry Trust.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Health the Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir emotionally states that hope has finally arrived to the community of Anse La Raye. “Too long have the people of Au Tabor and Massacre been deprived of clean water,” he said. “This project went even faster than I thought. As you see we already have the pumps in the catchment area, the treatment plant is already installed and the water storage tank is being constructed,” said Hon. Mondesir.
The contractor for the project is Farmex Technologies SARL of France with local contractor FDL Consult Inc.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2009 which will contribute substantially to socio-economic development on the west coast of St. Lucia.
Technical support is being provided by Halcrow Group Ltd., in conjunction with WASCO. Project oversight is provided by the Office of the National Authorizing Officer of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs and National Development.
