The ECCU Eight Point Stabilisation and Growth Programme will be placed on the international agenda when Governor of the ECCB, Sir K Dwight Venner presents the programme at the Annual General Meeting of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Turkey on 3 October.
According to Governor Venner, the IMF/World Bank AGM, which is the premiere financial event of the year, is one of the few events where small countries can project themselves. He said that showcasing the region’s strategic response to the global economic and financial crisis to the international community, increases the chances of securing technical assistance and funds to implement the programme.
In addition to the presentation at the AGM, Governor Venner will have direct discussions with other international funding agencies. This, he said, will give the region leverage when it engages in face-to-face discussions with the IMF and the World Bank.
While Governor Venner is confident that the ECCU leaders have the political will to take the Eight Point Programme forward because they have been actively involved in its development, he is of the view that having declared their intentions to the world, the resolve to implement it would be greater.
The Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group each year bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness.
The meetings, which are widely covered by the international media, also offer an opportunity for civil society organisations to share their views and interact with policymakers in a global setting.
Approximately 13,000 people, including observers from other inter-governmental organisations, representatives from financial institutions and bodies, and representatives of civil society organisations are expected to attend the meetings this year.
